Friday 5: Classics

A little late.

1. Do you like classic movies? (For our purposes let's say made before 1960)

2. Why or why not?

3. Which movies from that era are your favorites? Why?

4. Who are your favorite stars from that era?

5. If you had the chance to do a really good remake, which movie would you choose, and which of today's stars would be in it?

Thanks for covering the Friday 5 duties this week.
1. I love classic movies, much more than contemporary ones, as a rule.

2. Because they often have strong story lines and good characters and aren't full of filthy language and topics.

3. African Queen, It's a Wonderful Life, Casablanca, Twelve Angry Men, Mrs. Miniver, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, North by Northwest

4. Ingrid Bergman, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Donna Reed.

5. Oooo that's a very tough one. Today's stars are a dismal lot; probably no more than in earlier eras but we know more about them. I like Hugh Laurie and Nicolas Cage, but can't really see them in the same movie. The only recent male female match-up I liked unreservedly was Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line but I'm not sure they could pull it off again.
African Queen would be an interesting remake if you could keep the innocence.

1. I like some and not others, but overall, yes.
2. A more innocent time, values that were more wholesome.
3. The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, Friendly Persuasion, North by Northwest, African Queen, Rear Window, Singing in the Rain.
4. Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman.
5. I asked a question that has stumped me!

1. Love, Love, Love classic movies!

2. They are more innocent, no bad language, or sexual innuendo!

3. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite movies (and books) of all time. The court room scenes get me every time! Other favorites: White Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, Singing in the Rain, Casablanca, Miracle on 34th Street

4. Jimmy Stewart, Bing Crosby, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck

5. They had better not remake any of these, the originals are too good!

1. YES! Movies made in the "Golden Age" of film, such as The Thin Man and its sequels, are very good.

2. They're very different from modern film. Many of them seem more human, and some are just excellent stories; or very well acted. The kind of film that is good no matter what time period it was made in.

3. The Thin Man, It's A Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Notorious, North by Northwest, Spellbound, Libeled Lady, Arsenic and Old Lace, and many more.

4. Jimmy Stewart is hard to beat, and Ingrid Bergman is gorgeous. William Powell and Myrna Loy are always enjoyable, especially together; I HATE CLARK GABLE; Donna Reed, Cary Grant.

5. Hmm....I would love to redo the Thin Man, it's one of my all-time favorite movies. But casting would be the devil. Gosh. I think Harvey Keitel would be good, but he's too old. Maybe, MAYBE Nicholas Cage as Nick, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Nora. MAYBE.
